The Samples - No Room :: Music
The Samples - No Room The cold January air sent chills down my spine as my sister Susan and I hustled down the streets of New Haven, Connecticut. Our destination was a small club called Toads' Place. When we finally arrived at the club I was relieved to feel the warm air inside begin to restore the numbness that had taken over my body. We made our way in to find that the club was virtually empty. This was to be expected, considering we arrived forty-five minutes before the opening band was scheduled to play. I immediately clung to the heaters trying to warm my frozen body, but Susan ripped me away and dragged me to the front of the stage where Andy Sheldon, the bass guitarist of The Samples, would soon stand. My sister had dreams of one day marrying him, overlooking the fact that he was married and had kids. As we waited I stood and took in the surroundings, which included walls covered with pictures, albums and autographs. Jackson Browne, Bob Marley and Bruce Springsteen are only a few of the famous name s; history was seeping out of the walls. At first the club seemed large, but as the people piled in it became smaller and smaller. A thick haze of smoke began to collect above us and hover under the dim lights. The atmosphere was perfect for an incredible show. The opening band began to play and herds of people rushed in charging their way to the front. Susan and I stood our ground bonding together to keep our ideal spot. As the opening band played, Sean Kelly, the lead singer of The Samples, video taped the crowd from behind the stage as Jeep, the drummer, ran around trying to get our attention. Eventually The Samples took the stage opening with "Did You Ever Look So Nice;" the song that would set the tone for the rest of the show. The song opens with the quiet tap of Jeep's drumsticks and then Al joins in on the keyboard with a beat that you can't help jumping to. It becomes your pulse; the crowd begins to jump up and down in unison; if you stop you don't know what will happen. The rest of the band slowly works its way in and then Jeep jumps in on the drums completing the sound. Sean begins to sing. Bosh the Rightful
ââ¬Å"His Airnessâ⬠ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s what people call him. Michael Jordan is indeed one of the most notable of all sports superstars. Then came a surprise. Still in his prime and internationally recognized as ââ¬Å"the best basketball player on the planet,â⬠Michael Jordan closed the door on the most glorious NBA stint and walked away in 1997, leaving a tremendous void in the sport and raising the question of who will replace him as the game's ambassador and marquee play. Not since Muhammad Ali has an athlete so dramatically affected a sport on virtually every level ââ¬â transcending basketball as a sport and becoming an international figure that probably would be recognized in some of the remotest spots in the world. Michael Jordan, born in 1963, is considered by many to be the greatest player in basketball history. The 6 ft 6 in (198 cm) shooting guard first became known as an explosive individual scorer, but as he matured as a player he adopted a more team-ori ented approach to the game.Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six National Basketball Association (NBA) championships (1991-1993, 1996-1998). His widespread appeal to fans helped make basketball one of the worldââ¬â¢s most popular spectator sports (Stein, 2005). After his retirement, what's the possibility of someone wearing the crown of a guy who brought an unprecedented level of excitement to the game, did things on the court that other players simply couldn't do ââ¬â and made it look easy while he was doing it?What's the likelihood of someone sharing the pedestal with the guy who won three MVP awards, led his team to three consecutive championships, had seven straight scoring titles, boosted television ratings an average of 17 percent when the Bulls played, collected two Olympic gold medals, earned an estimated $36 million annually in endorsements, and was the top draw on the road, attracting an average of 18,433 fans per game in his last season? Not surprisingly, there's a p opular thought among Jordan fans who say there'll never be another Michael Jordan. However, there are new NBA rookies out there who might match the outstanding mark Jordan made in basketball history. Then, came Chris Bosh of Toronto Raptors. Chris Bosh was born March 4, 1984 and was number 4 in the NBA draft pick in 2003. A power forward, heââ¬â¢s a great inside and outside player. Few are blessed with his athletic prowess as he plays with a good amount of aggressiveness, but doesn't get out of control or lose his composure easily. His long frame and amazing fluidity, he runs the floor exceptionally well.Bosh doesn't have the perimeter skills of Kevin Garnett, namely shooting, but appears to like playing in the post more so than Jordan and could end up filling out into more of a dominating post player. Has great ball handling skills and really can pass the ball. He has some developed post moves and an advanced offensive game for a 21 year old. He can even step out to three point l and and hit a few long range shots. Most sports critics say, he understands the game well, doesn't make unnecessary moves, uses the drop step and jumps hook effectively.Because of his long arms, timing, and explosiveness, he is an excellent shot blocker. The team even goes to him to bring the ball up the court at times as a point forward. He is now dubbed as ââ¬Å"Air Canadaâ⬠comparable to Michael Jordanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Air Jordanâ⬠tag (Forrest, 2005). But, heââ¬â¢s more famous to the title as ââ¬Å"The Futureâ⬠. When the Raptors claimed the NBA title against the Chicago earlier this year, Bosh is getting a step closer in his path to equal Michael Jordanââ¬â¢s fabulous feats. No one might be comparable to Jordan now, but surely there will be ââ¬Å"The Futureâ⬠who might be giving us the hopes and the thrills of the game we just love, which is basketball. A Reflection On Public Service - 2124 Words
As students of Masters of Public Service degrees, it is imperative to develop a holistic and deep understanding of what ââ¬Å"public serviceâ⬠means. Our class discussions have shown us the ambiguity of striking a balance between opposing forces: between intention and outcome, aid and empowerment, intrinsic and extrinsic affirmation, and self-interest and altruism. How do we balance these perspectives, when each has its benefits and pitfalls to the success of any project? In determining my own definition of public service, my hope is to elucidate factors that optimize each of these perspectives. In doing so, we can come closer to defining public service in a way that is both operationally useful and ethically guiding. Considering course documents and class discussions, I have defined the phrase as follows: The ââ¬Å"publicâ⬠is a marginalized body unable or unexpected to monetarily repay servants for provided goods. ââ¬Å"Serviceâ⬠is an act that results in improved quality of life as reported by receiving individuals. Therefore ââ¬Å"public serviceâ⬠is defined by (1) actions resulting (2) in goods that improve quality of life (3) as reported by marginalized recipients (4) who are unable or unexpected to monetarily repay the servant. By fragmenting the definition into four parts, I can address the issues of intention versus outcome, aid versus empowerment, intrinsic versus extrinsic affirmation, and self-interest versus altruism in public service. Inequality and Redistribution - 1384 Words
Inequality and Redistribution Income inequality in America is higher than in any other industrial nation in the world. Many believe this creates serious problems for both United States citizens and its economy. The inequality difference is continually getting larger and worsening these problems. Over the past three decades Americaââ¬â¢s economy has seen continuous growth; but this is accompanied with no increase in purchasing power for poor and middle class citizens. On the other hand, incomes of the richest Americans have dramatically increased, which only furthers the gap between social classes. In 2008, the top one percent of Americans earned over 20% of the national income, which is significantly higher than only 50 years ago. Economists use a strategy called the ââ¬Å"Gini Coefficientâ⬠to measure the relative equality between nations. Since 1980, the Gini Coefficient for the United States has risen from 0.388 to 0.45. This is a very high rating compared to other egalit arian countries, such as most of Europe and Japan, whose ratings are generally in the high 0.2s and low 0.3s. Wealth inequality is even greater than income inequality, however. ââ¬Å"The top 1 percent of Americans own forty-four hundred times as much wealth per person as the bottom 40 percent.â⬠This large difference between rich and poor American citizen wealth and income creates numerous problems for the United States. What is Culture - 1459 Words
Question One What is culture? Culture can be interpreted in multiple ways and have many different meanings to different individuals. Consequently, it is because of those facts that a definition is so hard to create. To some, culture results from consumed meanings by a social group (Lewis, 2008). Others view culture as something based on economics and servitude (Marx, as cited by Lewis, 2008). Hebdige ambiguous concept As I attempt to tease out a personal definition of culture based on my own experiences and various readings this semester, I select a few common themes that bare significance in my conceptualization of culture. Within my fraternity, there was a group of involved students on campus. We were small in number, and we were not receiving recognition from our organization for our accomplishments within the campus community. In order to gain the appreciation we desired, we formed ââ¬Å"secret societyâ⬠within our fraternity in which we met and helped each other balance campus involvement with fraternity involvement. We formed a subculture under the dominant culture that was our fraternity. Subcultures cannot exist without the dominant group, an d must develop as an extension of the dominant culture. Subcultures do not develop in a ââ¬Å"vacuumâ⬠, but the dominant culture influences them in many ways, both complex and subtle (Charon, 2002). Without the dominant culture, a subculture would not exist, and that is evident with this statement. Each needs the other Another component of a subculture is the adoption of symbols from a dominant culture to have their own meaning within the context of the subculture. Subcultures do this through the concept of bricolage. Lewis (2008) defines bricolage as ââ¬Å"the rearrangement of cultural elements and styles in order to produce new meanings and stylesâ⬠(pg. 395). My report is on Agoraphobia. Agoraphobia typically results from the fear of having a panic attack in specific situations "from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event of having an unexpected or situational predisposed Panic Attack or panic-like symptoms. People with this phobia worry that they will not be able to get somewhere safe. They often worry about having a panic attack or panic symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, loss of control, or difficulty breathing. People with Agoraphobia usually fear large places like malls, theaters, grocery stores, or parks. They also fear large crowds or places where they feel trapped like traveling on a plane, driving in rush hour traffic, being on a bridge, or visiting the doctor. Usually, a person with agoraphobia can articulate what they fear or where they fear it. Although, sometimes they only know that they have a sense of dread. The person will begin to avoid the situations where he or she feels uncomfortable. Agoraphobia can worsen without treatment; in some extreme cases, that person can become trapped in his or her own home because he or she is too fearful to leave. Sometimes, the person can participate in activities or travel if a trusted companion goes with him or her. The main treatment for agoraphobia is a certain type of Cognitive Therapy called exposure therapy. The goal of this therapy is to get the person to confront the fear directly. With success they learn that they have nothing to fear. The first step of this therapy is to treat Panic Disorder because most people with agoraphobia also have panic disorder. As the panic attacks disappear, the person becomes more confident about-facing the situations they fear. Then the person begins exposure to the places or situations that they fear. Most therapies will start with the least feared and move up to the most feared. The exposure sessions usually last about 2 hours and occur twice a week. Daily practices without the therapist is critical. About 75% of those treated with exposure therapy report less anxiety, improved morale, a better quality of life at home and work, expanded interests and activities, and more gratifying relationships. Depending on the situation, some people also find that cogni tive therapy, assertiveness training, biofeedback, hypnosis, meditation, relaxation, or couples therapy is helpful.
